COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyse the role of a leader in business, with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility are also emphasized.

Outline of Course Content

Unit 1:  Manager and the Modern Workplace

Managing an organization is a diverse and complex endeavor. In this unit, students will learn about the various types of organizations, the types of leaders, and issues and strategies when communicating within an organization. Students will also be introduced to moral dilemmas and the ethics that should be embedded within an organization, as well as the aspects of social responsibility that many companies practice.

Unit 2:  Managing in Organization

In the previous unit students learned about leadership in management; now they will focus more on leadership in business. This unit covers business strategy, plans, and planning processes with their respective benefits. Of course, planning is nothing if you cannot measure results. This unit will demonstrate students the manner in which businesses and leaders measure results and set up goals.

Unit 3:  Leadership

An essential aspect of leadership is how leaders understand human behavior, and express themselves to others. There are several approaches to leadership that students will be introduced to and discussed in this unit. Furthermore, communication skills necessary for effective leadership are introduced and discussed. There are several traits that are inherent in leadership, and students will explore those traits and characteristics in this unit.

Unit 4: Working Along

In this unit, you will learn about what it means to work with others. There are several ways we can learn to do this. Of course, there is “being nice,” but in a management position, we need to learn what drives people to work effectively with them. That’s why in this unit we will learn about motivation theories in the modern day, how stress affects our colleagues, and how to manage conflict in the workplace.

Final Exam        

Final Mark will be determined following percentages:

70% Determined by the evaluations conducted throughout the duration of the course:

Products – Assignments, Essays, Journals, Portfolio

Observations – Presentations

Conversations – Conference with the Teacher

30% Final examination of the students and/or a Culmination Assignment
